What Happens Under The Blanket? |
During the cylinder's process of building an oxide coating (to protect itself), it depletes the available oxygen under the blanket. Without oxygen, the conditions in this area accelerate the deterioration of the surface structure of the cylinder. The results are apparent in the photo. |

Why Does Rust Sentry Work? |
The galvanic series is a table showing the order of metals' susceptibility to corrosion. Zinc is far more susceptible to corrosion than any other metal in the press room environment. We have found it to be the only non-hazardous metal which does not produce an oxide coating to protect itself. Other sacrificial metals are either too hazardous (i.e. chronium, cadmium, magnesium), too short-lived (i.e. magnesium, lithium) or tends to complicate anodic protection (i.e.aluminum, magnesium, chromium). When a blanket treated with Rust Sentry is applied to a cylinder exposed to normal press room conditions, all corrosion action switches to the zinc particles embedded in the blanket backing. Even in an abnormally aggressive environment, Rust Sentry will protect the cylinder's surface until it has become completely exhausted and the zinc has turned to a soft white powder. |

Under normal conditions, Rust Sentry will outlast the blanket. If white powder is observed when the blanket needs to be replaced, it is an indication that there are contributing factors present which need to be addressed. These conditions may include high chlorine content in the incoming water, dampener line cleaners or water system treatments. |
How Is Rust Sentry Applied? |
Rust Sentry is a powder which can be applied to the back of the blanket at any time before it is installed on the cylinder. If unaddressed conditions cause Rust Sentry to become exhausted before the blanket needs to be replaced, it can be reapplied as often as necessary. It will inhibit the corrosion progression as well as act as an indicator in your search to find the cause of the problem. |
